SOLID GOLD REMEMBERS
Canadian power-house label, Solid Gold Records releases Greatest Hits Package featuring 80s chart-toppers Chilliwack, Toronto, and the Headpins!
Toronto, Canada It has been said that everything old becomes new again, and that certainly is true of all things circa 1980. The big hair, the spandex, and the head-bands are all enjoying resurgence. And, thanks to Sold Gold Records the best of Canadian rock n roll history is finally available in newly remastered editions which fans both old and new can enjoy for a lifetime.
Solid Gold Records, under the direction of co-founder Steve Propas and Ed Glinert, a 35 year industry veteran, is releasing Greatest Hits compilations from classic 80s rockers Chilliwack, Toronto, and the Headpins. The CDs offer remastered versions of the groups chart-toppers in an enhanced CD package that feature original videos and complete historical biographical artist summaries. These must have CDs are ideal for anyone wishing to relive the fabulous 80s.
"These songs are full of memories for all Canadians", says Steve Propas of the Greatest Hits CDs. "Theyve been unlocked and it is a pleasure to make them available again. The whole decade was a really special time for music in this country, and songs like Chilliwacks My girl, (Gone, Gone, Gone), the Headpins Turn it Loud, and Toronto's Your Daddy Dont Know are classic examples of what was happening at the time. The Solid Gold Records operation set the scene on fire we housed the best of the best, and its time to turn the spotlight back on that music".
Critics have called Bill Henderson and Chilliwack band mates Ab Bryant and Brian Macleod "one of the greatest almost made it bands in Canadian history". They had a streak of number one hits in Canada and the US by creating a formula for what has come to be known as classic Canadian rock. Many Canadian musicians that are currently enjoying international success now know Chilliwack as the band that opened the door to the world. Their musical inventiveness is legendary in Canadian music history.
The Headpins, were an off spring of the Chilliwack genius. Guitarist Brian MacLeod and Ab Bryant founded the group as a side project while still performing as Chilliwack. The band, which featured drummer Bernie Aubin and former figure skater turned vocalist, Darby Mills, quickly shot up to the No. 1 spot on the national charts when their first album Turn it Loud was released in 1982 and debuted as a double Platinum record, an impressive feat in 1982. With former MuchMusic Executive turned Sony Music Canada President, Denise Donlin as their on-the-road promotion/manager, the group set about touring extensively in support of bands like Quiet Riot, Whitesnake and Eddie Money, and in July 1984 the group hit the pinnacle of their success, sharing the stage with The Pretenders, Joe Cocker, Simple Minds, Pat Benatar, and Yes in a televised broadcast that was seen by over 40 million people.
Label-mates Toronto rounded out the premier acts launched by Solid Gold Records. From the outset the paring of the charismatic duo of Holly Woods on vocals and guitarist Sheron Alton quickly became media favourites, who with guitarist, singer and the groups primary songwriter Brian Allen formed the core of the bands creative leadership. The band had a successful string of hit singles throughout the early 80s. And, after the band split in 1984, the creative partnership between Sheron Alton and Brian Allen continued -- the most notable is the smash-hit song "What about Love" which was catapulted to the top-10 charts when it was recorded by Heart.
Sold Gold Records continues to expand its catalogue and will soon be bringing on other artists to the label. According to Solid Gold Records partner, Ed Glinert "Solid Gold not only has an outstanding catalogue which remains in high demand, but the label holds an important place in the history of the Canadian music industry. It is a solid foundation from which to build a strong, viable business. And, with the rapidly increasing interest in the 1980s we believe that Chilliwack, Toronto, and the Headpins music will find a new and expanded audience".
The music Solid Gold Records gave Canadians created memories for a lifetime and catapulted Canadian music and musicians on to the world stage. And, for over one million Canadians those memories still exists. These very special Greatest Hits packages were released to stores across the country on October 22, 2002.
